ION BODY EMS personal training is an innovative training system using low-frequency electrical pulses, combined with controlled simple movements, stimulating the whole body. Delivering maximum results in health, fitness & wellbeing, helping to reduce pain in just 20 minutes once a week in our Leeds studios.

EMS training with ION BODY has been scientifically proven to be effective for people of different age groups and different physical fitness levels. This means a performance athlete with many years of training experience can train next to a person who has been physically inactive for many years. However, certain medical conditions are known to be contraindications and EMS training with ION BODY is not recommended in certain cases.

For some medical conditions, a doctor’s consent may be needed and suitability for the training needs to be assessed on an individual basis.

Medical conditions requiring assessment before commencing EMS training include the following*:

  • Acute diseases, bacterial infections or inflammatory processes

  • Operations within 2 months

  • Heart conditions

  • Stents or bypasses within 6 months

  • Untreated high blood pressure

  • Diabetes mellitus

  • Pregnancy

  • Electrical implants eg. pacemaker

  • Tumours,cancer or undergoing chemotherapy

  • Bleeding disorders

  • Neurological diseases eg. epilepsy

  • Abdominal wall or inguinal hernias

Conditions below require GP consent.

  • Respiratory diseases

  • Acute neuralgia or herniated discs

  • Implants or prostheses less then 6 months

  • Disease of internal organs

  • Cardiovascular diseases

  • Osteoarthritis or joint diseases

  • Epilepsy, seizures within 12 months

  • Motion Sickness

  • Edemas

  • Open skin lesions, eczema or burns

  • Varicosis or varicose veins

  • Acute alcohol or drug use

  • Prescribed medication (not including birth control)

Yes, EMS training imitates the natural principle of muscle contraction, which is a result of the interaction between the brain, the central nervous system and muscle tissue. ION BODY uses a low-frequency stimulus to activate intense muscle contractions and your personal trainer will ensure that your individual training levels are an optimum fit for you. Compared to other strength training, EMS training is known to be particularly gentle on joints.

Whilst EMS training is generally safe, certain medical conditions are known to be contraindications. EMS training at ION BODY is not recommended for the following conditions:

  1. Pregnancy;

  2. Pacemaker or other electrical implants;

  3. Acute illness, such as fever, viral infections or acute inflammatory processes.

Medical consent may be necessary for some physical conditions. These should be discussed with your personal trainer before any training commences.

Please see further details in our answer to: Can anyone do EMS training? (below).

  9. Customisable for All Fitness Levels: Adaptable intensity for beginners, seniors, or those in peak fitness.

During ION BODY EMS training, the majority of the major muscle groups are activated in each session, therefore one 20-minute training session per week is sufficient.

In order to achieve the most effective results for muscular adaptation and physical functioning, your body needs time to rest and recover. Research shows that in EMS training, recovery and adaptation periods are significantly longer than for conventional weight and resistance training. ION BODY clients have the option to train twice a week provided that a minimum 4-night recovery period in between sessions is adhered to.

We have noticed that a fixed weekly time slot is helpful in maintaining training consistency and results.

Creatine Kinase (CK) is a metabolic by-product, released into the blood when we perform exercise. CK is recycled through the kidneys and therefore places a strain on them and the immune system in general.

A ION BDOY EMS session causes the release of high amounts of CK due to the amount of musculature activated and the intensity of the contractions. Initial EMS sessions could cause an extremely high CK release which is why we do not allow more than one 20-minute session per week within the first 6 weeks of training. Following this 6-week adaptation period, the body will have adapted and the CK release will not be as high.

CK levels will still place a strain on the immune system however and peak 72-96 hours following training. Therefore, we apply a minimum 4-night rest period between ION BODY EMS sessions, to ensure CK levels are not still rising when the next session is performed but would have peaked and begun to lower. Our clients’ safety and long-term health and training results are a priority.

Most beginners start with 1–3 minutes. More experienced participants may gradually increase their time, but longer is not always better.

Yes. Ice baths can help reduce muscle soreness, especially after intense exercise. The cold causes blood vessels to narrow, helping to reduce inflammation and temporarily numb nerve endings, which can ease pain and discomfort. As your body warms back up, increased blood flow helps support recovery by clearing metabolic waste and delivering nutrients to tired muscles.

Ice baths can help support circulation by triggering a natural vascular response. The cold initially causes blood vessels to narrow, directing blood flow towards vital organs. As your body warms afterwards, blood vessels expand, increasing circulation and helping deliver oxygen and nutrients while supporting the removal of metabolic waste. Regular cold exposure may also encourage healthier blood vessel function over time.

Yes. Ice baths may help improve mood and mental wellbeing by triggering the release of natural chemicals such as endorphins, dopamine, and adrenaline. This response can create feelings of calm, focus, and energy after the cold exposure. Many people report feeling more positive, resilient, and mentally refreshed following regular ice baths.

Ice baths may help support immune function by stimulating the body’s natural defence systems. Cold exposure has been linked to increases in certain immune cells, including white blood cells, which play an important role in fighting illness. Regular cold exposure may help build resilience and support overall wellbeing, although it should complement—not replace—a healthy lifestyle.

Ice baths can help sharpen focus and build mental resilience by activating the body’s natural stress response. Cold exposure increases hormones such as noradrenaline and adrenaline, which can enhance alertness, concentration, and energy. Regularly practising controlled cold exposure also challenges your mindset, helping develop discipline, confidence, and greater ability to manage everyday stress.

Ice baths may support healthier-looking skin by improving circulation and reducing inflammation. The cold causes blood vessels to constrict, followed by increased blood flow as the body warms, helping deliver oxygen and nutrients to the skin. Some people also report benefits for conditions such as eczema and psoriasis, although further research is needed.

Ice baths may help reduce pain by combining several natural responses to cold exposure. The cold can temporarily numb nerve endings, reduce swelling, and influence inflammation pathways within the body. Cold exposure also triggers the release of endorphins, the body’s natural pain-relieving chemicals, which may help improve comfort and recovery after exercise or injury.

Ice baths can help build resilience by training your body and mind to stay calm during controlled stress. Regular cold exposure challenges your ability to manage discomfort, strengthening mental discipline, focus, and self-control. The cold also activates the vagus nerve, supporting the body’s relaxation response and helping improve stress management and emotional balance.

Ice baths can temporarily increase metabolic rate by triggering thermogenesis, the process your body uses to generate heat and maintain core temperature. This activates brown fat, a type of metabolically active tissue that burns energy. While the calorie-burning effect is modest, regular cold exposure can complement a healthy lifestyle by supporting metabolism and weight management.

Ice baths may support brain health by triggering the release of a cold-shock protein called RBM3. Research suggests RBM3 plays a role in protecting and supporting synapses—the connections between brain cells responsible for learning, memory, and communication. Cold exposure may help support brain resilience and cognitive function, although more research is needed to fully understand these effects in humans.

Ice baths may help reduce muscle soreness, support recovery, improve circulation, increase mental resilience, boost energy levels, and promote a sense of wellbeing.

For most healthy individuals, ice baths are safe when used correctly. However, certain medical conditions may make cold-water immersion unsuitable. All participants should complete a health questionnaire before taking part.

Ice baths may not be suitable for people with certain heart conditions, uncontrolled high blood pressure, severe circulation problems, epilepsy, or other medical concerns. If in doubt, seek advice from your healthcare professional.

You may experience an initial cold shock response, including faster breathing and an increased heart rate. Our instructors will guide you through breathing techniques to help you remain calm and comfortable.

Induction sessions are supervised by trained staff who will guide you through the process and ensure you are comfortable and safe. After that, you will be able to dip independently with a member of staff on site.

No. Ice baths are suitable for beginners and experienced users alike. We provide full guidance and support throughout the session.

Swimwear or appropriate clothing suitable for water immersion. We also recommend bringing a towel, warm clothes, and footwear for after your session.

Many people use ice baths to support recovery and reduce post-exercise soreness, helping them feel refreshed and ready for their next activity.

This varies depending on your goals. Some people use ice baths once a week, while others benefit from multiple sessions each week.

Many participants report feeling calmer, more focused, and mentally refreshed after cold-water immersion. Regular exposure may help build resilience to everyday stress.

You can leave the ice bath at any time. We encourage participants to listen to their bodies and never push beyond their comfort level.

Children (under ~12 years): Ice baths are generally not recommended outside of specific medical or sports settings. Children have different thermoregulation and are at higher risk of getting too cold too quickly.

Teenagers (13–17 years): Some adolescent athletes use cold-water immersion, but it should be done cautiously, for short durations, and ideally under the guidance of a coach, athletic trainer, or healthcare professional.

Healthy adults (18–65 years): This is the group for whom most ice-bath research has been conducted. Healthy adults can generally try ice baths if they start gradually and follow safety guidelines.

Older adults (65+): Ice baths are not automatically unsafe, but the risks may be higher, especially for people with cardiovascular disease, high blood pressure, circulation problems, or certain medications. Consulting a healthcare professional beforehand is advisable.
